Evan is Growing Up

Evan has always been a baby boy in my eyes. However, a couple of things happened recently which made me realize that he is growing up to be a big boy.

On the way home from school a couple of weeks ago, Olivia was talking about her wanting to study Business in college, as she is interested in doing some kind of business after she grows up.  What’s funny was that Evan said he didn’t want to and was afraid to grow up.  I asked him why.  He said it was because he doesn’t know or has not decided what he wants to study in college and what he wants to do for a living after graduating from college.  He sounded like he was a little concerned, which was very cute J.  I told him it is too early for him to worry about things like this as he still has plenty of time to find out what he wants to do when he grows up. To further console him, I told him a lot of people don’t know what they want to study in college when they graduate from high school and there are people who still explore their true interest in life when they graduate from college. I also suggested to him that he can learn computer science if he really wants to develop video games, which he mentioned a couple of times before.

Also, a couple of months ago, we went out to eat in a Mexican restaurant celebrating Daddy’s birthday. Evan went to the restroom right before we were ready to leave, but he didn’t come back for a long time.  Finally Daddy went to the men’s room to check on him and found out he could not open the door to get out. After notifying the people at the restaurant, they mentioned that the door had been malfunctioning and would sometimes got stuck.  Afraid he would be panicky, we tried to talk to him outside the door with calming words and in the meantime tried everything we could to open the door, including using a table knife.  But nothing worked.  The waitress said it had to be done inside. She slid a knife to him underneath the door and asked him to follow her directions. To be honest, I could not follow what she said as I am not familiar with the structure of the lock. This whole thing lasted about 20 minutes, finally Daddy yanked on the handle real hard and opened the door. Everyone cheered and Evan just had a smile on his face.

Daddy mentioned to me on the way home that he was surprised Evan didn’t get panicky inside and cried.  We asked him why he didn’t yell for help when he found out he was locked inside. He said: “It is weird to yell help from a restroom. I figured I would just wait as one of you would realize I am missing and would come back to check on me.”  I remember saying to myself: “Wow, Evan really grows up. He would have been scared and crying in situations like this if he were still the boy in my mind.” J

There are also a couple of little things: I noticed that the new socks I bought for him barely fit him. I remember how surprised I was when I learned from the store clerk he was already a size 7.5! That means his feet are almost the same size as mine, even though we are 7” apart in height.  I specifically compared my foot with his, and his foot was actually a little bigger than mine which really shocked me.

Well, even though he is always that little boy in our minds, Evan is indeed growing up to be a big boy physically and mentally J. I am so proud of you Evan!
