The First Book Olivia Wrote

Olivia has always liked Technology and really enjoys her time in the Tech club. Earlier this year, Mr. Love, the Tech club teacher, taught them how to create their own book on Mixbook.com, where they chose a topic to write and designed the layout of each page. They could choose to publish their books on this website and the best thing was, they could buy the book they wrote.  The book would be delivered to your home like a real published book you would see in the bookstore.

Olivia has written a number of books now but her very first one was a big deal. It was called "Are You Ready for a Dog?" When she asked whether she could buy this book in a hard copy, I didn't hesitate as I thought writing a book was a milestone achievement for her and it would be a great gift that she could cherish for the rest of her life.

What's interesting was that it turned out she was the only one who ordered the book in hard copy. So Mr. Love wanted to see it, her teachers wanted to see it, her counselors from the afterschool program wanted to see it…the news flew and eventually the principle heard about it and she dropped by and asked Olivia to bring the book so she could take a look too!   Everyone who read the book complimented what a great writer she was. Olivia was a popular girl during those two weeksJ!

Since the book got such good reception, Granna ordered one and we ordered one for Wai Gong & Wai Po (grandparents) in China too. They were all very proud of her!

Pg.2: All the dogs you will see in this book were up for adoption!

In Montgomery County, PA there is a place called the SPCA. The SPCA is a shelter with dogs, cats, and even rabbits. This place is working hard to make sure their animals are healthy and can be placed for adoption. If you live near here and you're going to get a pet I would try the SPCA. Pg.3: Puppy Mills

Pg.4: Many dogs are found in Puppy Mills. They breed dogs and sell them to pet stores. Puppy Mills aren't good because they don't take care of the dogs. They keep them in very cramped cages. Usually the dogs become sick and then other dogs get sick. If a dog has a special need or is ill the Puppy Mills will either put the dog to sleep or let it die on it's own. So you think it would be good to get a dog there so it doesn't die but once one is sold the puppy mill will try to breed more dogs to sell.

Pg.5: How to STOP puppy mills?

Pg.6 To stop puppy mills all you have to do is don't buy dogs from pet stores. That way the puppy mills will go out of business because they can't sell any dogs. If you want a pet you should check local shelters for dogs and other pets.

Pg.7: Most shelters need assistance. To help you can contact them to volunteer.

Pg.8: Adopting a Dog

Pg.9: To adopt a dog you first have to make sure your family is OK with having a dog. Then make sure you have all a dog needs. You should have...
1. A big yard  
2. A sturdy fence so the dog can't run away
3. A place for the dog to sleep (like a dog house)
4. Lots of puppy or dog love
5. Dog food and water

Pg.10: Choosing a Dog

Pg.11: Now you need to choose a dog. I would go to a local animal shelter. If you're allergic you should get a hypo-allergenic dog. Now remember just because a dog is old doesn't mean he or she is meaner than a puppy. Choosing a dog can be hard, but you should choose the one that bonds with you the most.

Pg.12: Try to choose a dog that is friendly. If you have a child make sure the dog doesn't bite, doesn't get too jumpy, and isn't too big for your place. Make sure the dog isn't sick when you adopt him. Also make sure it gets its shots every year. Next, after you bring the dog home try to connect with the dog. Play with it, feed it, walk it, make sure it's not scared. After spending time with it, find a name that fits him or her.

Pg.13: It is important you have a collar and a leash for the dog. Give the dog lots of attention. After awhile it will connect with you then you can teach him or her tricks. Make sure it makes friends.

Pg.14: Give your dog a lot of love. Feed it every day and remember to walk it. Let it exercise by running, playing a sport, or walking somewhere and back. Now, you're ready for a dog. Have fun with it and always give it lots and lots of love.
