Fire and Snowstorms Are Devastating All the Ukrainian Villages Behind Pokrovsk

Zelene, Donetsk The last eight Russian tanks were destroyed between last night and this morning. The Ukrainian Armed Forces destroyed them with drones, mines, and shoulder-fired devices after Moscow launchedyet another mechanized offensive on what remains of Pokrovsk. At least a third of Russian attempts to break through the front have long been focused on this flank, while on the northern one Moscows orders are to test Ukrainian defenses at as many points as possible to identify weak points to attack.
Thus, in recent hours, the occupying forces have attempted to make a breakthrough toward Vovchansk, Vovchaskyj Kutor, Hrafske, Zybyne, and then Kruhle and Dehtiarne. In Kharkiv and Sumy, mainly in Myropillia,small Russian infantry units continue to attack Ukrainian positions, suffering losses that force them to retreat.Accordingto Vadym Karpiak, the spokesman for the 8th Special Forces Corps of the Ukrainian Armed Forces,the goal of these assaults is to create a buffer zone.
In other words,this means extending the front into disruptive areas where they can continue to attack, not so much to gain ground as to distract Ukrainian defenses from Pokrovsk and other areas of Donbasfrom which I wrote my latest dispatches.
In the last 24 hours, the Ukrainian Joint Forces Group has thusrecorded21 Russian breakthrough attempts on the northern flank, including those areas from which the occupiers had already been repelled, such as Kupiansk, Velyky Burlutsk, and Lyman.
Here in Donetsk, the Russian artillery never sleeps: despite temperatures already dropping below 25 degrees Celsius, day and night, fire and snowstorms are devastating all the Ukrainian villages behind Pokrovsk, including Zelene, now almost disappeared from the map. Ukraine is resisting despite lacking the firepower to match its enemys, but is drawing on every available resource.
Ammunition arrives from the West in fits and starts, in quantities not even remotely comparable to those produced by Moscow or received from its partners.
Despite being overwhelmed by that artillery barrage and a deluge of glide bombs (the Moscow Air Force continues to drop over 1,500 a week), the Ukrainian defense forces continue to grind up an impressive amount of Russian cannon fodder. This amount now far exceeds what the Kremlin manages tocollectfrom as many as 128 countries.
The Ukrainian strategic objective remains the same, now alsoquantifiedby the new Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov asfifty thousand Russians per month. Without mincing words, Fedorov, referring to the military losses Ukraine intends to inflict on the enemy to turn the war around, thus established Ukraines military roadmap for 2026. As datareleasedby British intelligence and President Zelensky himselfshow, Ukraine is already close to this objective, having neutralized 43,000 enemy soldiers in December.
Due to these massive losses, Moscow is now transferring its best paratrooper units to different parts of the front such as Orikhiv and Huliaypole and plans to further increase the production of long-range drones. Enough to launch a thousand of them against Ukraine per day by 2026,accordingto the Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, Oleksandr Syrskyy. One of those drones, another Gerbera, wasfoundon the morning of January 17 near the village of Nuc?reni in the Moldovan county of Telene?ti.
The growing sense is that if Ukraine had received the support it deserved, this war would have been over long ago.
The continuous blackouts severely damaged the heating system of our house in Western Ukraine while we were here in Donbas.
Without electricity, the pump couldnt circulate the liquid while the fire was lit. As a result, the system caught fire, and the whole house was at risk of burning. Fortunately, it did not, but the whole system needs to be changed, and the house needs to be restored. Tubes are all bent, walls are blackened by haze, and the heating system doesnt work, requiring an entirely new system.
We are doing our best since Allas parents live there, but theres still a lot to work on here, too, as the people around us are in no better situation.
