狄蘭·托馬斯（Dylan Thomas，1914 - 1953），英國詩人、作家。他寫詩，寫散文、廣播劇，酗酒，為BBC朗誦詩歌。第三次前往美國時因飲酒過量而亡。1951年，托馬斯作此詩於父親病危期間。整首詩充斥著夜晚與白晝、黑暗與光明、溫和與狂暴、死亡與生命的二元對立，語言和意象有飽滿的張力。托馬斯麵對父親的衰老和生命光芒的漸弱，用無比熱烈的語調吟唱著一首不甘屈服的歌。諾蘭在2014年的電影《星際穿越》中賦予了這首詩新的含義。
這是一首田園十九行詩(villanelle)，格律甚嚴：五個三行詩節加一個四行詩節，五步抑揚格，韻式為aba aba aba aba aba abaa，第一個詩節的一三兩行作為疊句在後麵的詩節末行輪流重複，並在四行詩節中共同收尾。翻譯家陶誌健先生在<美語世界>論壇發表了其十言律詩體中文翻譯，譯文優美，功力深厚，堪稱當今中譯之典範。拙譯跳出原詩體音步限製，給原作意象充分的自由展現空間，保留韻式與間架結構，以新詩體呈現。拙作得到陶先生拔冗評閱，實感榮幸，受益良多。
