語言域

語言域(language  register)

在英語學習和教學中有一個非常重要的概念叫‘’語言域‘’。

簡單說來就是 "The right person at the right place says the right thing.什麽人說什麽話，什麽場合說什麽話。這包括語氣、語調、詞匯，句式各個方麵。

舉個小例子，候寶林說過一段相聲，諷刺三十年代電影明星的舞台腔。

受其影響平常人說話味兒也變了。場景是一個資本家雇三輪車時的一段對話。

資本家: 請問這位三輪車師父，能不能拉我去西四排樓? 如果你願意，我會十分感激你的。

車夫: 沒有問題，感謝你照顧我的生意。

資本家: 我可以付你三毛錢。

車夫: 三毛錢! 不，五毛錢，三毛錢未免太少了一點，我實在不能答應你的請求!

這一段對白聽起來十分可笑。原因就是說的話，語氣和說話人身份不付。

我們初學英語時，全是課本英語，不知道也不會變換語體。有一天一位學生對外教說，‘’ Be seated，please!" 外教說這句話沒有錯，不過這是神父在禱告後請教眾坐下時說的套語。

 

語言一般分三域:正式,非正式及介於兩者之間的中性語域。

比如，說到人150歲的壽命，可以有多種表達法:

1. Humans will be able to live 150 years in the future.

2. Human life span may extend to 150 years in the future.

3. A man may live long enough to celebrate his 150th birthday.

4. The expectancy  of human life is about 150 years.

這幾句話都正確，但受眾不一樣。如果對家裏老人說你能活150歲 ‘’Daddy, your life expectancy is 150 years。‘’ 這話聽起來該挨揍!

 

正式域 (formal language)：特點是句子完整、詞匯精準。一般用於學術論文，專箸，官方文件，合同及正式場合，文章例如：“Good morning, sir. It‘s a pleasure to make your acquaintance.”很高興和您相識。

再聽一段在聯大的發言:It is generally held that world peace can only  be maintained on the basis of equality of rights and justice of all nations  big or small.

非正式域 (informal language) ：用於朋友聊天、家人聚會等輕鬆場合。特點是多使用俚語、縮寫和省略句。例如：“Hey! Great to see you!”

‘’ I get a kick out of traveling ." 我喜歡上旅遊了。

中性域(semi formal language)：介於兩者之間，用講座，專題討論，課堂發言或與陌生人的日常對話，既禮貌又不刻板。例如一段開場白:

" Good morning, ladies and gentle men,We are happy to have Mr. Smith with us today, and listen to what he got to say on the subject ‘’AI and us‘’。Let's give him a warm welcome!

 

出於方便一般分為書麵語written English or bookish English與口語(spoken English)

書麵語的特點主要體現在句式與詞匯的選擇上與口語有很大差別。

書麵語喜歡用抽象名詞做句子主要成份，而口語則避免抽象。

書麵語說The decrease  in salary changed his lifestyle.

或With the decrease in salary, he changed his lifestyle.

口語說His salary decreased  and thus changed his lifestyle.

這些抽象名詞大多由動詞轉化而來:

understanding-- understand

encouragement--

encourage

agreement--

agree

accomplishment--

accomplish

 

belief-- belive 

 

比較區別:

There is a common belief that he is  capable of doing the job.

 

We all believe that he can do the job.

 

His accomplishment is a great encouragement to us.

 

We were greatly encouraged by his accomplishment.

 

語言域不是什麽高深的學問，使用母語的人會很自然地切換語言域，但對使用非母語者這是一個不小的挑戰。在應用英語時，能意識到“語言域”的存在並選擇正確的頻道能幫我們少一些尷尬，多一些溶洽，比如在正式場合避免說一些‘’二百五‘’的話，在朋友聊天中不使用過於正式的詞語以避免使自己變成欠受歡迎的人。
