Georgetown大學是美國傳統的精英大學之一。一本大學指南（Fiske）將她，麻省理工學院、斯坦福大學，芝加哥大學，杜克大學，及八大常青藤大學列為精英大學。她的昵稱“Hoyas”（Hoyas Saxa：What rocks！）和吉祥物“Jack the Bulldog”（牛頭犬傑克）都是典型的美國人的精神和品格的表現。說她是傳統精英的根據之一，她是美國最古老的天主教大學。早期的美國大學或是教會的附屬機構，或是依教會的使命建立。隨著國家和社會的變遷，許多大學，包括哈佛和耶魯，的宗教傳統成為微縮的宗卷（microfiche files）。而喬治城（亦或譯為喬治敦）則是保守著宗教傳統的頂尖大學之一。
