第八章
【原文】
上善若水①。水善利萬物而不爭,處眾人之所惡②,故幾(jī)於道③。居善地④,心善淵⑤,與善仁,言善信,政善治⑥,事善能,動善時。夫唯不爭,故無尤⑦。
【注釋】
①上善:最高等的善。若:像。
②處:停留、居住之意。
③幾(ji:一聲):作“接近”解。
④地:低下、卑下的意思。
⑤淵:深的意思。
⑥正:行政的意思。
⑦尤:怨咎。
【譯文】
最高的善就像水一樣,水善於滋潤萬物卻不與其爭短長。它總是停留在眾人不願去的低窪之地,這種品德,最按近於“道”。上善的人總是甘居卑下的環境,心胸善於保持沉靜而深遠博大,待人善於相助、真誠可親,說話善於信守諾言,為政善於治理,辦事善於發揮所長,行動善於把握時機。正因為有不爭的美德,所以才不會出現過失,招來怨咎。
English Translation

The highest good is like water,
Nourishing all things and not contending with them;
Dwelling in loathsome places and thus coming close to Tao;
Dwelling among the lowly;
Great-hearted;
Loving in relationships;
Sincere in speech;
Establishing order in government;
Demonstrating ability in undertakings;
Perfect in its timing.
Only where there is no contention can there be flawlessness.
