“Why this Major” 文書怎麽寫？

   在美國大學申請的文書撰寫中,需要提交兩類主要的文書：1. 主文書，又叫個人陳述Personal Statement; 2. 補充文書, 又叫小文書 Supplement Essay。

    主文書，顧名思義，是你申請每所學校的主要申請文書，主要目的是分享有關你是誰，你是如何成長的。

    除了主文書之外，大多數大學都需要寫各自學校的補充文書。補充文書僅針對特定的學校，各學校有他們自己要求的文書題目。這些文書的目的是展示你對學校的適應性。補充文書的題目五花八門。其中，”Why This College”, “Why this major”, “Community”, “Extracurricular Activity”是最常見的題目。

?”Why This Major為什麽選擇這個專業”文書要求你闡述你對所選擇專業的興趣。大學想了解你的學術背景，你的專業特長和熱情，將來可能的職業規劃。通過這篇文書，大學試圖了解你在學術方麵是否適應這所大學，大學現有的資源能不能幫助你實現目標。簡而言之，要讓大學明白，為什麽要在我們這所學校學習這個專業？

我們先看幾個例子。

    耶魯大學 (2019-2020) 曾經要求學生根據以下提示寫一篇補充文書：

    耶魯大學的學生有足夠的時間探索自己的學術興趣，然後再致力於一個或多個主要的研究領域。許多學生改變了他們原來的學業方向。到目前為止，哪些學術領域最適合你的興趣或目標？請從提供的列表中最多指定三個。為什麽這些領域吸引你？ （不超過100個字）。

Students at Yale have plenty of time to explore their academic interests before committing to one or more major fields of study. Many students either modify their original academic direction or change their minds entirely. As of this moment, what academic areas seem to fit your interests or goals most comfortably? Please indicate up to three from the list provided. Why do these areas appeal to you? (100 words or fewer).

    普度（Purdue）的一篇補充文書題目是：

“Briefly discuss your reasons for pursuing the major you have selected.” 

     卡內基·梅隆大學 （Carnegie Mellon）要求學生討論他們對所選擇的學習領域的激情：

    “大多數學生會根據隨著時間的流逝而產生的激情或靈感來選擇他們想要的專業或學習領域。是什麽激情或靈感促使你選擇了這個學習領域？”  

 “Most students choose their intended major or area of study based on a passion or inspiration that’s developed over time—what passion or inspiration led you to choose this area of study?”

    賓大要求學生撰寫一篇文書來說明他們如何選擇專業的：

“你是如何發現自己的知識和學術興趣的，將來如何在賓大進行學術探索？請根據你選擇的特定專業進行回答。” 

“How did you discover your intellectual and academic interests, and how will you explore them at the University of Pennsylvania? Please respond considering the specific undergraduate school you have selected.”

    這是杜克大學錄取的一個學生的補充文書。

題目：如果你是第一年入讀普拉特工程學院的學生，請討論為什麽要學習工程以及為什麽要在杜克大學學習（250字）。

Prompt: If you are applying to the Pratt School of Engineering as a first year applicant, please discuss why you want to study engineering and why you would like to study at Duke (250 words).

One Christmas morning, when I was nine, I opened a snap circuit set from my grandmother. Although I had always loved math and science, I didn’t realize my passion for engineering until I spent the rest of winter break creating different circuits to power various lights, alarms, and sensors. Even after I outgrew the toy, I kept the set in my bedroom at home and knew I wanted to study engineering. Later, in a high school biology class, I learned that engineering didn’t only apply to circuits, but also to medical devices that could improve people’s quality of life. Biomedical engineering allows me to pursue my academic passions and help people at the same time.

 Just as biology and engineering interact in biomedical engineering, I am fascinated by interdisciplinary research in my chosen career path. Duke offers unmatched resources, such as DUhatch and The Foundry, that will enrich my engineering education and help me practice creative problem-solving skills. The emphasis on entrepreneurship within these resources will also help me to make a helpful product. Duke’s Bass Connections program also interests me; I firmly believe that the most creative and necessary problem-solving comes by bringing people together from different backgrounds. Through this program, I can use my engineering education to solve complicated societal problems such as creating sustainable surgical tools for low-income countries. Along the way, I can learn alongside experts in the field. Duke’s openness and collaborative culture span across its academic disciplines, making Duke the best place for me to grow both as an engineer and as a social advocate.

    “Why This Major為什麽要學習這個專業？”文書既難又不難。一定要抓住核心和關鍵，從而正確、有效地寫作這篇文書。 一篇出色的文書需要包括以下幾方麵內容：

 1.介紹你的學術興趣是如何形成和發展的。

    撰寫一篇優秀的“為什麽要選擇這個專業”的文書的文章，第一步是闡述你怎麽接觸到這個專業，並觸發了對這個專業的熱愛，並在這個專業的某些領域進行了自我發展。分享一些具體、特定的例子來闡述你的興趣如何發展，要比那些華而不實的語言強百倍。你的介紹中最好要涵蓋你的課程學習和相關的課外學習和研究經曆。如果有足夠的空間，你還可以添加你感興趣的特定的具體研究方向的內容（例如，你對社會學感興趣，尤其關注兩性關係或種族主義研究）。

    如果可能，盡量考慮分享與你是如何對該專業感興趣的小故事。這在文書開始時特別有效，因為講述一個故事會吸引讀者，同時為你的學術興趣描述提供一個良好的鋪墊。比方說，如果你申請耶魯大學的英語專業，你可以通過從寫你童年時期每個星期六你和父親去圖書館來開始你的文書。

     盡管小故事是申請文書很有作用的手段，但選擇寫哪些細節很有講究。為了使你的故事有感染力，千萬要避免把所選專業相關的所有課外活動都羅列在這兒。這不是簡曆！正確的方法是，讓招生官一眼就看到你的小故事與所選擇專業之間的關係。例如，你早年去圖書館的經曆讓你在當地的書店找到一份工作，並為社區組織作者閱讀。

2.詳細描述你的學術誌向和專業目標。

    僅僅表達你對特定專業的熱情是不夠的。你需要描述自己的專業目標，並說明所選擇領域將如何幫助你實現目標。也許你與作家接觸的早期經曆啟發了你寫小說。然後，你可以進一步解釋英語專業的學習將如何使你學習那些優秀的文學作品，從而為你成為作家打下堅實的基礎。 

3.解釋你為什麽要選擇這所學校。

   最後, 是為什麽到所申請的學校來學習這個專業。文書要描述所申請大學將如何幫助你實現目標。你的理由應不僅限於“該專業的大學排名很高”，還應深入研究課程，教學方法以及特定的研究方向或資源。

    例如，如果你想來有一天成為一名作家，你就要解釋耶魯的英語課程將如何幫助你走上成功之路。也許你有興趣通過著名的耶魯大學倫敦留學計劃來研究英國曆史名人。或者你表達希望在耶魯提高你的創造性寫作技能。你還可以提及渴望參加特定課程，與某位教授一起學習或在學校報社工作的願望。請注意：不要羅列你知道的所有知名教授，而是隻寫出與你的興趣高度相關的特定的老師。如果是這樣，隻能說明你沒有真正的學術興趣。

   當然，本文介紹的僅僅是一般的寫作技巧。各個學校有時在寫作的要求和細節上不完全相同，字數要求也不一樣。具體寫作時一定要根據各個學校的題目深入分析，寫出讓招生官眼前一亮，舍不得放手的優秀文書，從而搶到美國名校拋出的繡球。
