February 17, 2026 – Early Departure from Toronto

Originally the trip was planned to start on February 18, but we left one day earlier to avoid the forecasted winter freezing rain in Toronto. Changing the flight and hotel reservation cost over $800 extra, but it allowed us to travel safely and avoid potential flight delays or cancellations.

Arrived in Santiago earlier than planned and checked into Holiday Inn Express – Las Condes. The hotel location was excellent—situated in a safe business district with many restaurants, shopping areas, and services nearby.

February 18, 2026 – Exploring the Neighborhood and Dinner

Stayed at Holiday Inn Express – Las Condes, located in the business district of Las Condes. The area felt modern, safe, and very convenient for dining and shopping.

During the day we visited Costanera Center, one of the largest shopping malls in South America. Inside the mall we also stopped at Jumbo Supermarket to buy groceries and snacks.

In the evening, we had dinner at Pinpilinpausha, a Spanish restaurant recommended by the hotel. The restaurant is known for traditional Spanish cuisine, including seafood and tapas.

We also tried Pisco Sour, the national drink of Chile. The cocktail is made with pisco (a grape brandy), lemon juice, sugar, and egg white, and it is one of the most popular drinks in the country.

The dinner was a great introduction to local food culture and a relaxing way to end the first full day in Santiago.

February 19, 2026 – San Cristóbal Hill and Downtown Exploration

In the morning we went to San Cristóbal Hill, located inside Metropolitan Park of Santiago. We climbed all the way to the top on foot, which was a great experience and provided many scenic views along the route.

On the way up we passed the Embassy of the United States, Santiago area. Partway up the hill we stopped for a refreshing drink called Mote con Huesillo, a traditional Chilean summer drink made with peach syrup, dried peaches, and wheat grains. It was very refreshing and had a sweet peach flavor—perfect for the warm day.

At the top of San Cristóbal Hill we visited the Sanctuary of the Immaculate Conception, which includes a large statue, a small church, and a chapel. The panoramic view of Santiago and the Andes Mountains from the summit was spectacular.

After enjoying the views, we took the Santiago Funicular down toward the downtown area.

? Downtown Santiago

While walking toward the city center, we noticed a beautiful bird mural painted on a house. It turned out to be a Venezuelan restaurant called Delicateses Criollas.

We continued exploring downtown and visited several cultural landmarks:

  • Chilean National Museum of Fine Arts

  • Chilean National History Museum

  • Santiago Metropolitan Cathedral (however it was already closed when we arrived around 5 pm)

We also walked around Plaza de Armas, the historic center of the city, and saw the nearby La Moneda Palace, the government building of Chile.

Returning to Las Condes

To return to the hotel area in Las Condes, we took the Santiago Metro. It was very convenient—simply tapping a credit card at the gate allowed easy access to the Red Line subway.

Back in Las Condes, we stopped at a local bakery near Costanera Center and enjoyed delicious ice cream flavors including pistachio and coconut, which was a perfect treat after a long day of walking.
