George Michael的這首歌是為他的同性伴侶Anselmo Feleppa而寫的，在Anselmo身上，George Michael第一次無條件地深深愛上一個人。Anselmo因艾滋病並發症而去逝，他的病逝多年以後，一直讓George Michael的靈魂得不到歸屬。
其實，大家還不知道George Michael是gay，他自己也是在多年的自我困惑中才接受自己的性傾向的。
但是他的性傾向已越來越成為大眾和媒體的話題。
最近，也關注了一些關於同性戀方麵的話題。對一個在成長過程中沒有宗教和懷疑性傾向背景下長大的人，很難對異性戀之外的性愛形式有所理解。
常覺得同性戀是先天的嗎，還是後天誘導的結果。
也有一些朋友和同事或同學是同性戀，通過George Michael後麵的come out，才真正的來認真看待這一群體。

其實以前在George Michael日益竄紅的時候，沒人意識到他是gay，其實他自己也是經曆了非常痛苦的自我懷疑，自我否認，痛苦疑惑，和最後接受的複雜過程。
在一次CNN采訪時，他提及在27歲時，就有過一次同性戀體驗；到意識到自己是gay時，他就沒有再dating girls，因為他已認同了自己是gay這一事實。他說：他的歌看起來是寫給女性的，實際上是寫給男性對象的。
當時的英國，同性戀群體艾滋病流行，包括他的巴西男友就死於同性戀並發症；沒人公開自己的同性戀身份。
George Michael是一個典型的hobbit型英國男人，非常隨意自然，down to earth；但同時又是個非常頑固，原則性很強，特立獨行，隻按自已常理出牌的音樂人。他自己控製每一作品的音樂production，從一開始就確定了他作品的質量和個人風格，當然也讓其它想在他身上賺錢的媒體機構不滿。George Michael也是個非常注重個人隱私的人，他覺得外界沒必要介入他的私生活，他對自己的名聲，財富，以及音樂生涯，當時穩定的感情發展感覺滿意。
1998年4月7日，George Michael加州Beverly Hills的Rogers Memorial 公園的公共洗手間被捕事件，直接把George Michael推到風口，讓他成為舉世觀注的笑話。
對一個智商極高，思想自由，秉持個人創作源於生活的George Michael來說，他並沒有回避矛盾，而是直接以自己的音樂—也就是半年以後創作出來風靡全球的位居英國音樂排行榜第一的歌曲outside來作為回擊。
在歌曲裏，首先，他承認他是同性戀，公園的事情是他所為，他對自己的同性戀身份毫無羞愧。
其次，他想質疑的是：國家機器無處不在，他們不光監管偷窺同性戀，也滲透到社會的不同角落，如公共場合的夫妻，壓抑的個體；而警察自己卻在無人注意下，搞起同性戀。
在這首歌曲裏，他穿上了警察的服裝，邊歌邊舞，並將廁所變成迪斯科舞廳，還插入了真實的當時媒體報道的信息，還調侃地戲稱自己完成了社區服務。歌曲的曲風歡快與幽默， George Michael好象又回到了以前唱wake me up before you go-go的時又唱又跳很funkin'孩子。
這真是讓舉世驚掉了眼鏡，這也太實誠了吧。
在一次采訪的時候，George Michael也承認，他的outside就是一個報複，他let it a go! 那個臥底的警察後麵訴訟他，要求賠償，但未果。至於他公共廁所的行為，他後麵也解釋了。人在depression的時候，做出的有些事情是意想不到了。這我相信。如皇後樂隊Freddie死後，其它三個人都經曆了depression，誰也沒想到有六個孩子的john會在外麵包養個豔星。George Michael調侃得也很有趣：他對免費的漂亮男人，並不拒絕。哈。
George Michael被捕事件對他個人的聲望毫無影，Outside一曲的走紅也許是音樂界曆史上最著名的針對對個人羞辱反敗為勝的案例了。這首歌也為George Michael贏來了舉世的尊重和熱愛，因為他的作品表現了他的坦誠，不屈人格與而對來國家機器壓力的不懈回擊的作風。這也再次證明George Michael作為一個自由獨立的音樂人的票房價值。
我喜歡George Michael，除了喜歡他特立獨行音樂人的人品和風格，也喜歡他知道自己是誰，願意做什麽。
除了音樂，他對政治的認識也很深刻。他早就提醒媒體界了：Trump的種族主義言論會打開潘多拉的魔盒，當今社會思想的自由與寬鬆，是幾代人努力出來的結果。
2016年聖誕節那天他去世，那晚他的伴侶睡在車裏，他早期Wham!的歌曲Last Christmas是聖誕期間的經典傳唱，估計這樣的處境與結局對所有他的忠實粉絲來說，都是個沉重的打擊。斯人已逝，但他的音樂就是留給世人的最寶貴的財富。
到現在，我們還在聽他，還在懷念他，就因為他的音樂告訴我們：要活出自我。
