How to Adjust a Rainbird 42Sa

The Rain Bird 42SA is a pop-up, gear-driven rotor sprinkler with a 3/4-inch threaded inlet that provides even and efficient watering for large, continuous spaces like lawns. It can water in a complete circle or in an arc as small as 40 degrees, and the spray can reach from 26 to 38 feet. Both the arc and spray distance are adjustable. You can also change the nozzle to regulate the volume of water that the sprinkler emits as well as the width of the spray pattern. Replacement nozzles come individually or as part of a kit.

Adjusting the Arc

Adjust the arc while the water is on or off. If the water is off, you'll have to lift the sprinkler head out of its casing with a flat-head screwdriver and hold it out while you make the adjustment.

Turn the rubber rotor cap on the top of the sprinkler head all the way to the right, then turn it left as far as it will go. This fixes the left edge of the rotation.

Locate the arc adjustment screw, which is one of two screws on the rotor head. The arc adjustment screw is the one with the "+" and "-" signs along side of it. The device is preset to turn 180 degrees. Turn this screw clockwise with a flat-head screwdriver to increase the rotation arc and counterclockwise to reduce it. If the water is running, turn the screw only in the direction that the sprinkler is rotating. Turning it the other way can damage the ges.ar

Adjusting the Spray Distance

Adjust the spray distance while the water is on and the sprinkler is operating.

Locate the radius adjustment screw -- it's the one on the opposite side of the spray head from the arc adjustment screw.

Turn the radius adjustment screw clockwise with a flat-head screwdriver to reduce the radius, which is the distance the sprinkler throws the water. Turn it counterclockwise to increase it.
