Antonioni constantly reminds us that we are not watching a play on stage. We don’t have the luxury of picking and choosing what we want as spectators in a playhouse. In a way, all film directors are dictators who force the audience to see what they desire through the camera lens.
Antonioni prefers images to convey the message rather than words. In this respect, he is the exact opposite of Ingmar Bergman, whose films depend heavily on dialogue. Antonioni never relinquishes his passion for the moving pictures he meticulously chooses for us. According to that standard, he is an innovative filmmaker and an exceptional director.

It's a slow movie as hell. Still, I like it; it feels like watching a psychological novel. The ending scene is one of my favorites: two people trying to recapture love when there's no love anymore... Pure poetry in film form, Antonioni's talent is undeniable.

I'd almost forgotten who her leading men were, and I was happy to see Telly Savalas, Peter Lawford, and mad Phil Silvers vying for her attention. Young Janet Margolin played her lovely daughter. Shelley Winters and Lee Grant, both veterans of the Hollywood screen, provided excellent support for the cast. The picturesque setting of Rome added to the grandeur of the film.
