"God rewards those with reverence when it comes to meals," my father used to say, a notion I couldn't fully grasp.
"The Pearl River Family" enlightened me. Chen Wei (portrayed by Zhang Han), a young and talented Cantonese chef, was unjustly criticized by food critic Li Naiwen and subsequently dismissed by his employer, Xidian House. Xidian House then hosted a banquet and bribed shareholder and food critic Li Naiwen.
Chen Wei stormed in, swearing to expose the food critic, even if it meant chopping off his own toes.
As blood splattered the hall, it woke up Xidian House: "For those who are blessed with meals by God, reverence is essential." Chen Wei returned to work at Guangzhou Grand Restaurant, refusing to betray his principles. He demanded to nullify the shareholder and food critic.
Chen Wei, blessed by God with meals, was agile and sincere, approaching matters and ingredients with meticulous authenticity. His banquet was an embodiment of the essence of Cantonese cuisine. Before each banquet, Chen Wei observed fasting and bathing, seeking spiritual tranquility.
Turning point: "If you can't beat it, join it." Food critic Li Naiwen married his daughter to Chen Wei, leading to collaboration on an innovative and inclusive Cantonese banquet, daring to be ahead of the curve.
