My notes: Even since I took lessons en Francais, I was apparently fond of the Novel entitled "The Three Musketeers", a historical adventure novel written in 1844 by French author Alexandre Dumas. It is in the swashbuckler genre, which has heroic, chivalrous swordsmen who fight for justice. Set between 1625 and 1628, it recounts the adventures of a young man named d'Artagnan (a character based on Charles de Batz-Castelmore d'Artagnan) after he leaves home to travel to Paris, hoping to join the Musketeers of the Guard.

Movie industries have been trotting out numerous versions of it since the 1930s, I've bought two DVDs and seen a few versions of it. I didn't see this 2011 version (actors: Milla Jovovich, Orlando Bloom, Ray Stevenson, Til Schweiger, Logan Lerman) until now - whose vivid dialogues brought some smiles as There are versions of the saying in English, French, Italian, and German, such as "history was written not by heroes but by victors." More, below.

The list of the American Dialect Society, quote researcher Ken Hirsch has pointed to instances in French from 1842 (“[L]’histoire est juste peut-être, mais qu’on ne l’oublie pas, elle a été écrite par les vainqueurs” or “[T]he history is right perhaps, but let us not forget, it was written by the victors”) and Italian from 1852 (“La storia di questi avvenimenti fu scritta dai vincitori”—or, as Hirsch translates it, “The history of these events was written by the winners”). And by 1844, as Hirsch noted, at least one of these narrower statements had made it into English. A description of defeated Maximilien Robespierre, the Jacobin hero during the French Revolution, described the state of his reputation like so: “Vanquished—his history written by the victors—Robespierre has left a memory accursed.” And, “it is the victor who writes the history and counts the dead.” " “for history is written by the victors and framed according to the prejudices and bias existing on their side.”

Another notable quote: d'Artagnan's father told his son: "get trouble. make mistakes. fight.live.love." Being wrong is not a bad thing like they teach you in school. It is an opportunity to learn something. There are no mistakes, only lessons. Growth is a process of trial and error.
