上世紀30年代，中華民族麵臨內憂外患，戰火紛飛，民不聊生，男人不得不拋家舍妻，外出尋找生路，而留守的女性卻麵臨社會動蕩與家庭貧苦的雙重壓力，春桃 就是這樣一個時代背景下最典型的女性。春桃的未婚夫大龍在走西口的途中遭遇馬賊，生死未卜，春桃又被當地惡霸陷害，慘遭沉河，逃脫後她和小叔子二虎雙雙逃 亡，毅然踏上了尋夫之路，途中千辛萬苦終遇大龍，卻不曾想大龍已有烈女九裏香。春桃悲痛欲絕，幸而耿直的二虎向春桃表白了已久的愛意，可就在春桃即將收獲 幸福的時候，命運又再次打擊她，讓她不但突遭馬賊擄掠，被販賣到青樓，更是被軍閥惡霸陶正遠強占，受盡淩辱，直到她和二虎的兒子被陶正遠霸占，自己落入山 崖險些喪命。春桃不得不落草為冦，不料等待她的卻是兒子不認和無法擁有二虎的痛苦。春桃一路艱辛，遍嚐人間苦難，生不如死，但卻一次次與命運抗爭，她最終 的命運和愛情的終果將糾集每一位觀眾的心……
