1、kick ass 了不起 A: Wow, you fixed my computer in less than 10 minutes. You'regood。 A: 哇！ 你不到十分鍾就把我的計算機修好了呀！ 你很棒！ B: Yep. I just kick ass。 B: 是的！ 我就是厲害！ "kick ass" 除了字麵上的“踢屁股”外， 還有“厲害、打敗”的意思。當“踢屁股”時， 比如某人放你鴿子， 你很氣，就可以說: "I'm going to kick his ass." (我得踢他的屁股)。當“厲害”用時，就像上麵例句一樣用。"kick ass" 還可作“打敗某人的意思”。比如某人一向在某方麵比你強， 終於有一天你比他厲害了，你就可以說:"Hahaha...I kicked your ass."。覺得 "ass" 太難聽的人， 就用 "butt"吧！ 改作形容詞就變成ass kicking. 你可以說， wow, this new trick is asskicking. 或者說， this is an ass kicking trick. Kick somebody's ass有給某人一個教訓的意思。
2、kiss ass 拍馬屁
A: Mary, I'm sorry for cheating on you before. Do you see anychance that we can get back together? A: Mary, 我真的很抱歉對你不忠實。你想我們可不可能重修舊好呢？ B: I don't know, but you can kiss my ass。 B: 不知道， 不過你可以親我的屁屁(巴結我)。 Kiss somebody's ass 是拍馬屁的意思， 但是在這句話裏的意思是"你就做夢去吧",也就是"你去死吧". 馬屁精顯然就是ass kisser
3、XYZ 檢查你的拉鏈
Hey, man. XYZ。 老兄啊！ 檢查一下你的拉煉吧。 "XYZ" 是 "Check your zipper." 的意思。在美國，填表選項時多用打“X”來表示(台灣則用打勾表示)。這個選項的動作就叫"Check", 也就是這裏的XYZ 的 X所代表的。Y 是Your, Z 就是 Zipper 囉！
4、Hit the road. 上路了
A: Do you want to come in for some tea? A: 你要不要進來喝個茶呢？ B: No. I'm running late. I really need to hit the road。 B: 不了。我快遲到了， 得上路了。 "running late" 是快遲到了的意思。 "Hit the road" 的 "hit" 有“去”的意思。好比某人每周去健身房三次， 你就可以說 "He hitsthe gym three times a week."。 "I really need to hit the road." 還可以用說成"I really need to getgoing."。
5、hang out 和朋友在一起
A: I don't know what is going on lately. Jack seems to curse alot these days。 A: 不知道最近 Jack 怎麽搞的。 他經常口出惡言。 B: Well, that's just what you get from hanging out with thewrong crowd。 B: 嗯， 交錯了朋友就是這樣啊！ "hang out" 是和朋友一起做一些事。看電影、逛街、聊天都算。也不限指異性朋友。 你可以問你的朋友， Hey, what did you guys do this weekend。你的朋友可以說， well, nothing special. we just hung out. 這個意思就是， 也沒幹什麽，就是呆著。
6、click （兩人）合得來
I really like talking to her. I think we two really click。 我很喜歡和她說話。我覺得我們兩個蠻合得來的。 好玩的字吧！ 不過 click 不一定隻用在異性之間。朋友之間的頻率相同也可以用。 趙晴注: 當兩個人不click的時候， 你通常可以說， I don't know...but the chemistrydoesn't seem right. chemistry 這裏指的是兩個人不來電， 指同性異性都可以。
7、suck 差勁、糟透了
A: Guess what? We've just now missed the bus, and the next onewon't come for another 45 minutes。 A: 知道嗎？ 我們剛好錯過公車了； 下一班(車)還要四十五分鍾才會來。 B: That sucks。 B: 真遜！ "suck" 是“差勁”的意思。 "That movie sucks." 是“那部電影真是糟透了”的意思。 倒黴東西當然就是sucker.。.你可以說 these files are a mess! it is gonnatake forever to sort out these suckers. sucker通常不指人。
8、catch some Zs 小睡一下
A: Excuse me. I have to catch some Zs。 A: 抱歉！ 我想小睡一下。 B: I thought you just woke up. Sleepy head。 B: 我以為你才剛睡醒。愛睡蟲。 漫畫裏 的人睡覺， 不是都畫"Z,Z,Z..."來表示嗎？ 這裏的"catch some Zs" 就是這樣來的。"I have to catch some Zs." 也可以說"I have totake a nap." 或 "I need to snooze."。 對不起， 我剛剛睡著了。可以說：oops, I just dozed off。
9、take a dump 上大號
A: Would you mind closing the door? I'm trying to take a dumphere。 A: 你可不可以把門關起來呢？ 我正在上大號。 B: Well, learn to lock the door next time。 B: 那麽下次學會把門鎖起來吧！ "dump" 是“丟掉”的意思， “丟”什麽不必我解釋了吧？ “我要上廁所”(大小號都一樣) 可以說 "I need to use the restroom." 或簡單地說 "Ineed to go."。 dump也有垃圾堆的意思. 你可以說， I can't believe you actually livehere! It is a dump! --你住的地方真爛. 但是， take a dump是一種比較粗俗的說法， 一般男性多用。通常大家會說 #1 或者 #2, 跟我們的說法一樣。 想去上廁所， 你可以說， mother nature is calling。或者說的文雅一點--I am going touse the facility. facility 這裏指的就是restroom. 在別人家裏， 你通常會問， may I usethe bathroom? bathroom這裏就是廁所的意思
10、crank up 把聲量調大
A: Hey! The volume is too low. Why don't you crank it upsome? A: 嘿！ 這聲量太小了。你把它調大一點好嗎？ B: No problem。 B: 沒問題。 這裏的“聲量調大”也可以說 "turn it up"。意思是一樣的。 cranky 則是形容人暴躁、易生氣。如: "Why are you so cranky today? Somethinghappened?" 你今天怎麽這麽容易生氣？ 發生什麽事了嗎？ 和cranky同義的詞是grumpy. I am being grumpy because I didn'tsleep well last night。
11、Shoot! 說吧！
A: I've got a question for you。 A: 我想請問你一個問題。 B: Shoot! B: 說吧！ "Shoot!" 除了當“說吧！”外， 很多女孩子也用它來代替 "Shit!", 因為覺得後者聽起來不雅。
12、Give it a shot! 試試看！
A: It would be so cool if I can win this contest. I don'tthink I'm good enough, though。 A: 要是我可以贏了這項比賽的話會有多好。但我不認為自己夠好。 B: Give it a shot! You'll never know。 B: 試試看啊！ 沒試怎麽會知道！ "cool" 是“很棒”的意思。 "You'll never know." 是“你不知道(會怎麽樣”的意思。 要想說， 我知道這個可能沒戲.。.你可以說， I know it is a long shot, but Iwould still like to give it a try. 你起草了一份計劃書， 發給項目組裏麵的同事請他們幫忙修改，你可以說， this is my first shot at the project proposal, please feelfree to edit as you see fit. 你也可以說， this is my first stab.Stab是桶一刀子的意思， 放在這裏就變成my first try。
13、Got you! （騙、嚇.。.）到你了吧！
A: My sister just now called and said she's moving in withus。 A: 我姐姐剛剛打電話來， 說她要搬進來跟我們一塊兒住。 B: What? B: 什麽！ A: Got you! A: 上當了吧！ "Get you"是“(騙、嚇、捉弄.。.)到你了吧！”的意思。油畫班上有一個同學有一次想捉弄我。趁我正要把畫具收到櫃子裏時忽然把櫃子的門關起來，想趁機把我的手夾住。 結果我閃得快， 使他的惡計失敗。我便哈哈的對他說:"Haha.. You didn't getme."。 趙晴注: got you 要放在語境裏麵看意思. 這個說法本身還有"明白了" 的意思。 --can you make 20 copies of this document and give it to alldepartment heads? --Got you! 而i don't get it 通常是我弄不明白的意思. 還有就是別人說了一個笑話， 你沒聽懂的時候， 你可以說， whatis so funny? i don't get it。 14、no-brainer 不必花腦筋的事物 A: How do you use this program? It looks quitecomplicated。 A: 你怎麽樣用這個軟件呢？ 看起來蠻複雜的。 B: No. Looks can be deceiving. This thing is actually ano-brainer. Let me show you。 B: 不會！ 外表有時是會騙人的。這個東西其實很容易(不必花腦筋的)。我玩給你看！ "Looks can be deceiving." 是“外表有時是會騙人的”的意思。也許你的競爭對方把自己抬高，表現出很厲害的樣子， 你的朋友就可以說"Looks can be deceiving. He may be just a papertiger."來安慰你。
15、work one's butt off 很努力地（做一件事）
A: I can't believe all my work is gone just like this. I'veworked my butt off on this all day。 A: 我不敢相信我的心血就這樣丟掉了！我今天整天辛辛苦苦都在搞這個！ B: What happened? Computer crashed? B: 怎麽啦？ 計算機當了嗎？ 發現美語裏不少口語都跟"butt"(屁屁)有關， 像 "kick ass"、"kissass"(見本單元第一頁)。這裏的"work one's butt off" 也是。還有一個"freeze one's buttoff"(冷得把屁屁凍僵)也是喔！ work one's butt/ass off 如果你不願意說butt 或者ass 這個詞的時候(大多數人在正式或者半正式場合都會回避這兩個詞)， 通常你可以說 I have worked my tail off. 同樣，something is a pain in the ass 意思是， 什麽東西讓人討厭/頭疼死了. 你還可以說 somethingor somebody is a pain in the neck。
16、push around 驅使（某人）
A. Gary, do you think you can rewrite this paper. I don'treally like the topic。 A: Gary, 你想你是不是可以把這個報告重寫一遍。我並不是很喜歡那個主題。 B: Hey, I'm only trying to help you out. You shouldn't bepushing me around like this。 B: 嘿！ 我是在幫你忙耶！ 你不應該這樣指使我喔！ “把一個人推來推去”應該和“指使”很容易聯想吧！ 想到另外一個詞， push over, 指的是沒有主意/沒有主見/容易被別人說服的一種人. youshouldn't ask her for where to go for dinner. She is a total pushover
17、brush off 不理；默視
A: Have you talked to Mr. Lambert about Ian's obscene speechtowards you? A: 你跟 Lambert 先生提過 Ian 對你講的猥褻的話嗎？ B: Yes, but he brushed it off as if it were not a big deal tohim。 B: 有！ 但他輕輕帶過（不理）， 好象他覺得那並沒有什麽！ "brush away(aside)" 也是“不理”的意思。如"He brushed aside ourobjection."(他無視我們的反對)。 類似的說法還有， this is a serious mistake. you shouldn't justshrug it off like that。
18、boss around 頤指氣使
A: Oh! No. I've got assigned to work with Marvin for our groupproject。 A: 噢！ 不！ 我被分配跟 Marvin 一起做團體作業。 B: Ooh! I heard that he love to boss people around。 B: 唉呀！ 我聽說他很愛指使人的。 "boss around" 和 "push around" 都是“指使人”的意思。說一個人愛命令人也可以說"He isvery bossy."。
19、Oh, boy! 乖乖！ 唉呀！ 真是！
A: Guess what? We first got a flat tire, and now my cell phoneis dead。 A: 你猜怎麽了？ 首先我門的車爆胎了， 現在我的行動電話又沒電了。 B: Oh, boy! B: 唉！ "flat tire" 是“爆胎”的意思”。 "Oh, boy!"是美國人用的一種感歎表示詞句。不必問他們為什麽不說 "Oh, girl" 還是別的，因為他們也不知道。 oh boy在老年人裏麵尤為常用. 年輕人可以說， oh, crap! 或是最常見的 oh, no!
20、bound to 必定
A: Dan forgot his map? A: Dan 忘了帶地圖了嗎？ B: Yep! And he's bound to lose his way。 B: 是的！ 他鐵定要迷路了。 "bound to" 是必定的意思。 “你死定了！”就可以說 "You're bound to die."。 想說誰死定了， 最簡單的說法是 you are doomed!
21、all set 都準備妥當
A. Is my car ready yet? A: 我的車好了嗎？ B: Yep! We just need to get this paper work done and you'll beall set。 B: 是的！ 我們隻要把這份“文書工作”完成， 你就一切都準備妥當了！ 第一次聽到老美這樣對我說時， 我才剛來美國一個月。我到修車廠提領我的車的時候， 付完修車費後， 老板對我說"O.K.You're all set."。結果一臉狐疑地看著他說"Pardon?"。老板便微笑的向我解釋那是表示我的車已經都修好了，我已經一切都完成了。有時， 你到超市買東西， 買完要付帳時， 店員也會對你說"Are you allset?"。意思是問你是否想買的東西都找到了。 "paper work" 是指像“契約”、“證明”等等之類的文書表格。 趙晴注: 這個解釋的很好. 在店裏結帳的時候店員還會經常說到的一句話是 did you find everythingall right? 這隻是跟你客氣一下， 你說 yep 就可以了。
22、dirty work 卑鄙的工作；討厭的工作
A: All right. You go ahead and sign this paper and I'll do thedirty work。 A: 好吧！ 你就把這個東西(紙)簽了， 剩下來的“下流的工作”就交給我了。 B: (It) Sounds good to me。 B: 聽起來不錯！ "go ahead" 在美語中很常用， 除了“進行去做”的意思， 還有其它的用法， 以後再看。 "dirty work" 在此指的是一些沒人要作的扮壞人的事。我有一個朋友遇人不淑， 室友出去旅行一去不回(並不是死掉)，卻不來電話， 也不付他該付的房租。三個月後這個朋友氣炸了， 就向房東提出要另找室友的要求， 房東就請這位朋友填一張紙，然後把他室友的東西搬到別的地方去了。這個房東作的就是這裏說的 "dirty work" 了 |
