Rabbit TOOTOO (part one)

I have a rabbit. Her name is TOOTOO. When I adopted her, she was about one year old, since then it has been about ten short months.

It was love at first sight. I was on my way to the restroom, and then I spot this curiously looking thing right outside of the door. In the dark corner, looking at me with her big round crystal black eyes, there was the rabbit. I bent down to pat her back, so soft, fat and bunchy. When I tried to move a bit closer to her, she jumped at my foot suddenly. She had sharp claws, but like cats, you wouldn’t notice it till they use it. A few months later after our acquaintances, her owner couldn’t keep her any longer, and I gladly accept the offer of taking her in.

The first week of our relationship was filled with excitement and adventure. The first time I tried to feed her, I end up with two tiny teeth mark on my wrist. A few days later, I let her run around freely in the room while I was reading in bed. I had a friend over, and he was playing a PC game. Out of the blue I heard this strange chewing sound. Puzzled, I looked up and there she was, chewing a thin red rubber band. She must have found it somewhere on the floor. The most outrageous part of it is that she was looking right at me while chewing that damn rubber. It is as if she was doing it on purpose. She had most of it in her mouth; only a little bit of the band was still hanging outside her mouth. I gave a loud scream and jumped out of the bed and rushed to her. My friend was already holding her little head and trying to open her mouth with both of his hands. He made desperate attempt of forcing the rubber band out of her tiny mouth, while I was looking at them helplessly. The more he tried, the faster she chewed it and within a few seconds she swallowed it all. My heart sank all the way to my stomach. It is over, TOOTOO is going to die. I was feeling so nervous and guilty until I found her healthy and sound few days after the incident.

My mom came to visit me while TOOTOO was shedding. Truthfully speaking my mom is not an animal lover. She said she hates anything furry, which really confuses me because I cannot possibly love a hairless dog or cat or rabbit in this case unless I’ve seen them with hairs prior to them having none and with the expectation that they will have their hairs back. So anyhow my mom persuades me to send the rabbit to a) zoo b) local park c) hell otherwise she will go back to china. Being sort of like a neat freak, the hair and the smell of the rabbit was driving her nuts. I wouldn’t give in and tried my best to ensure her that I will 1) clean the bedding every day 2) vacuuming the hair at least once daily 3) use the best air freshening product . In the end my mom compromised and she started to take up the responsibility of feeding the rabbit. Slowly she was beginning to get really fond of TOOTOO, always lovingly referring TOOTOO as my “dog”. “Your dog shed a lot today”, “I fed a whole lettuce to your dog” etc. It was difficult for her to register the concept that a rabbit could be a house pet.
