when I watch an old man whisper to a lass
and the lass blush in apparent love
my whole pride subsides
and shame surges

now it is too late, everything is too late
a familiar Fermat formula won't do
a barren binary shift won't do
and dish juggling won't do

as I stroke my chin
as I turn back and look
the path I traveled winds and twists
scattered with silent tears and futile sweats

leaves are rain-laden, soil is rain-sodden
but pitied poverty is still my burden
