You are right - I did most maintenance myself. One time, I changed all rubber hoses for my 300SDL, to prevent from unexpected failure causing large cost. The total parts cost was about $70.
There are only two circumstances I'll go to dealers - 1) When there are recalls; 2) When I need to buy parts but no other part stores carrying it and the values are too small to order online, like small o-rings.
When I run into cases that the labor, tools or skills required to do the jobs are beyond of my capacity, I'll find good shops which are "specialized in european cars" or "german cars". For example, N years ago, my 300SDL transmission was done - "R" didn't work. I knew it's time to do rebuild and found a shop to do it. The total cost for me was $1k.
I follow the strategy that do more preventive work than fix them afterward.
