Selena 在整個拉丁樂壇獲得廣泛的認可，她的音樂跨躍了文化的界限，深受青年和老年人的喜愛。她同時也是一位性感舞台表演者，常被稱為拉丁的“麥當娜”。Selena除了她的歌唱事業以外還經常參加一些反毒品和宣傳人們對愛滋病的認識等活動。 1971年4月16日出生於美國得克薩斯州的墨西哥裔歌手Selena , 她的父親是一位墨西哥籍美國人，在Selena出生之前他就已經是Los Dinos樂隊的一名成員。在Selena十歲時，父親成為她的第一個經紀人，1983年Los Dinos樂隊為她錄製了第一首歌曲。
在其短暫的24年生命中，留下了無數令人難以忘懷的音樂。雖然出生在英語國家，但是Selena 絕大部分歌曲都為拉丁風格，並且用墨西哥式西班牙語進行演唱的。Selena 曾經為拉丁歌曲創造了無數輝煌和奇跡。90年代初是Selena 最為巔峰的時期。
80年代，Selena嫁給了Los Dinos樂隊的吉他手Chris Perez，這個樂隊的另外兩位成員是Selena的兄妹，為她錄製了許多歌曲。1987年Selena獲得本年度最佳女歌手獎和最佳表演獎。在1990年她和ENI公司簽定了合約，與Los Dinos樂隊合作發行了最新專輯。在1993年Selena和樂隊獲得了葛萊美最佳表演獎，同年發行了另一張愛情歌曲輯，同時開設了一家時裝公司。1994年，Selena出演了第一部電影《Don Juan Demarco》，在影片中飾演一位女歌手。年末發行了專輯《Amor Prohibido》，這張專輯獲得了葛萊美金獎。 1995，Selena開始準備錄製她的英語專輯，想在美國主流音樂上有所突破。
1995年，她發現她最可以信賴的朋友之一，她的歌迷會主席 Yolanda Saldivar 在她的時裝公司( Selena etc.boutique )和歌迷會的資金項目中有貪汙的行為。3月31日，Selena 在一家 Motel 裏向 Yolanda Saldivar 就一些做了很久但是仍然有很多疑問的賬目進行詢問，並且最後爭論起來 。隨後，Yolanda Saldivar 向 Selena 開了槍……但她沒有立即死亡，跑出大廳喊道“Yolanda Saldivar是殺人犯”。一個小時後Selena死在醫院中。Yolanda Saldivar被判入獄30年。
