英語中表示“圖形”的單詞很多，如何才能將這些近義詞的具體內在 含義和用法搞清楚？下麵我們一一做些解釋：
1. Figure
figure通常指幾何圖形或圖案；此外書中的插圖不管是什麽圖都可以用 figure表示：
Figure 5 is the schematic diagram of a d/a converter. （圖5是數/模轉換器的原理圖 ）
2. Diagram
diagram是科技英語中用得比較廣泛的一個詞，用於一般的圖形、圖表：
This simplified block diagram is valuable. （這個簡化了的框圖很有用。 ）
3. Graph 一般用於指曲線圖、標繪圖，也可指圖解：
The graph of this equation has been drawn above. （此方程所對應的曲線圖已在上麵畫出。 ）
4. Plot 往往可以與graph互換:
The plot of I versus V is a straight line. （I隨V的變化曲線是一條直線。）
5. View 一般用於機械圖或各種結構圖中的各向視圖，也用來指航海中使用的“對 景圖”（即實物圖片）：
The top and cross-sectional views of the memory structure are shown below. （這種存儲器結構的俯視圖和剖析圖如下麵所示。）
6. Profile 一般指零（部）件的外形輪廓圖，剖麵形狀圖： stratigraphic profile 地層縱斷麵圖 profile也可指各種分布圖：
density profile密度分布圖，pressure profile壓力分布圖
7. Pattern 用於指圖型、圖案、花紋等 A mask with 100 tiny individual patterns is placed over the chip and exposed to light. （將帶有1000個微小分立圖樣的掩膜放在晶片上並曝光。 ）
8. Drawing 主要用於各種工程圖紙及有關工程設計的附圖、插圖： perspective drawing 透視圖 projection drawing 投影圖
9. Chart 多用於航線圖和某種方向的圖，如nautical chart航海圖，flight chart 航空圖。
10. Map 指地圖、天體圖、布局圖以及一些專用圖形。 seismic map 地震圖 weather map 氣象圖 radar map 雷達圖
11. Sketch 一般指粗略勾畫的示意圖，草圖。
12. Layout 著重於被描繪對象的總體概貌，外形輪廓，總體安排和設計。 Among the disadvantages are great layout difficulties. （缺點之一是（電路）排圖困難。 ）
13. Line 一般僅用於線條描繪的輪廓和外形圖，如船體型線圖： The engineers are making the designing of the hull lines. （工程師們正在設計船體型線圖。 ）
14. Scheme; Schematic 指草圖、示意圖： wiring scheme 電氣配線圖
15. Draft, Delineation
Draft含有底稿的意思，delineation隻用於草圖、略圖、示意圖。這兩個詞用得較少
