世界上，流傳著，好多似是而非的觀點，這些觀點，初看起來很有道理，很能迷惑一些人；但是，仔細一推敲，就會發現這些觀點，經不起事實的檢驗。“中國人口太多”，就是一個流傳很廣的謬論，常常有人，把中國的貧窮落後，歸咎於“中國人口太多”，說什麽“現在中國，有13億人口，如果中國人口，減少一半，那麽人均國民收入，就會增加一倍。”真的是這樣嗎？我不想從理論上，駁斥這種觀點，事實勝於雄辯，下麵，我就讓事實和數據來說話。
首先，從中國人口，占世界的比例來看，自唐朝以來，中國人口，一直居世界第一位。 十九世紀初，中國人口有4億，世界人口是12億，中國人口，占世界的三分之一。到了二十世紀初，由於長期戰亂，中國人口，仍然是4億左右，而世界人口，增長到16億，中國人口，占世界的四分之一。現在是2004年，中國人口為13億，而世界人口已達64億，中國人口，隻占世界的五分之一左右。如果拿中國，與印度作對比，則中國人口的數量，減少得更快。據人口專家預測，如果，按目前中印兩國的人口，增長率繼續下去，到2020年，印度人口將超過中國。

人口增長快，就會阻礙經濟的發展嗎？請看日本的例子：二戰剛結束時，日本的人口，僅8，000餘萬人,六十年代末，日本人口突破1億，成為世界上，人口密度最高的國家之一。日本人口的激增，並沒有給日本，帶來沉重的就業負擔，和生態環境壓力，相反，卻刺激了日本經濟的高速增長。八十年代以後，日本人口的增長率，持續下降，經濟也步入衰退階段。

有人說：“現在失業的人很多，可見中國的人口，是太多了。”如果說存在失業，是由於人口太多，那麽，為什麽日本的人口，比澳大利亞多幾倍，而澳大利亞的麵積，是日本的二十倍，然而日本的失業率，反而比澳大利亞的還要低？在一個國家裏，如果，絕大多數人，都想打工，而不想當老板，那麽，即使這個國家，隻有幾萬人，也照樣會存在失業現象。一個國家，要減少失業率，最好的辦法，就是實施優惠政策，鼓勵更多的人當老板。
可見，把中國的經濟落後，歸咎於人口過多，而實行“計劃生育”，其原因不外兩種：一是，為1949—1979年失誤的經濟政策，尋找替罪羊；二是，在特定年代下，“病急亂投醫”的產物。
