I learned what to do when you're connecting cells (batteries) together. The electricity from the battery goes to the bulb and back to the battery. Mains are more powerful than batteries. And why won't the bulb light if you don't form a loop?
Circuits need to go in a full loop from the power source and back again for the electricity to travel properly. When you're connecting cells (batteries) together you have to connect the positive side to the negative side. Mains have more electricity than normal batteries. Since the mains produce more electricity than batteries it is more powerful and dangerous. So don't mess with mains.
