Un bel di vedremo, Maria Pellegrini

Canadian soprano Maria Pellegrini
From Madama Butterfly by G. Puccini

Cio-Cio-San "Butterfly" imagines Pinkerton's return: One beautiful day, we will see arising a strand of smoke over the far horizon on the sea and then the white ship will appear. It will enter into the port, it rumbles its salute. Do you see it? He is coming! I don't go down to meet him, not I. I stay upon the edge of the hill and wait a long time but do not grow weary of the waiting. And leaving from the crowded city, a man, a little speck climbs the hill.

Who is it? Who is it? And as he arrives

What will he say? He will call Butterfly from the distance. I without answering stay hidden to tease him a little, a little as to not die.

At the first meeting, a little troubled, he will call,"Little one, dear wife, Orange Blossom." All this will happen, I promise you this. Hold back your fears - I with secure faith wait for him.

Madama Butterfly "Un bel di vedremo" Puccini -live

M.Pellegrini sings a title role.
Recorded live in Italy,
Conductor Ernesto Barbini

ACT I. Japan, early twentieth century. On a flowering terrace above Nagasaki harbor, U.S. Navy Lieutenant B. F. Pinkerton inspects the house he has leased from a marriage broker, Goro, who has just procured him three servants and a geisha wife, Cio-Cio-San, known as Madama Butterfly. To the American consul, Sharpless, who arrives breathless from climbing the hill, Pinkerton describes the carefree philosophy of a sailor roaming the world in search of pleasure. At the moment, he is enchanted with the fragile Cio-Cio-San, but his 999-year marriage contract contains a monthly renewal option. When Sharpless warns that the girl may not take her vows so lightly, Pinkerton brushes aside such scruples, saying he will one day marry a "real" American wife. Cio-Cio-San is heard in the distance joyously singing of her wedding. Entering surrounded by friends, she tells Pinkerton how, when her family fell on hard times, she had to earn her living as a geisha. Her relatives bustle in, noisily expressing their opinions on the marriage. In a quiet moment, Cio-Cio-San shows her bridegroom her few earthly treasures and tells him of her intention to embrace his Christian faith. The Imperial Commissioner performs the wedding ceremony, and the guests toast the couple. The celebration is interrupted by Cio-Cio-San's uncle, a Buddhist priest, who bursts in, cursing the girl for having renounced her ancestors' religion. Pinkerton angrily sends the guests away. Alone with Cio-Cio-San in the moonlit garden, he dries her tears, and she joins him in singing of their love.

ACT II. Three years later, Cio-Cio-San waits for her husband's return. As Suzuki prays to her gods for aid, her mistress stands by the doorway with her eyes fixed on the harbor. When the maid shows her how little money is left, Cio-Cio-San urges her to have faith: one fine day Pinkerton's ship will appear on the horizon. Sharpless brings a letter from the lieutenant, but before he can read it to Cio-Cio-San, Goro comes with a suitor, the wealthy Prince Yamadori. The girl dismisses both marriage broker and prince, insisting her American husband has not deserted her. When they are alone, Sharpless again starts to read the letter and suggests Pinkerton may not return. Cio-Cio-San proudly carries forth her child, Dolore (Trouble), saying that as soon as Pinkerton knows he has a son he surely will come back; if he does not, she would rather die than return to her former life. Moved by her devotion, Sharpless leaves, without having revealed the full contents of the letter. Cio-Cio-San, on the point of despair, hears a cannon report; seizing a spyglass, she discovers Pinkerton's ship entering the harbor. Now delirious with joy, she orders Suzuki to help her fill the house with flowers. As night falls, Cio-Cio-San, Suzuki and the child begin their vigil.

ACT III. As dawn breaks, Suzuki insists that Cio-Cio-San rest. Humming a lullaby to her child, she carries him to another room. Before long, Sharpless enters with Pinkerton, followed by Kate, his new wife. When Suzuki realizes who the American woman is, she collapses in despair but agrees to aid in breaking the news to her mistress. Pinkerton, seized with remorse, bids an anguished farewell to the scene of his former happiness, then rushes away. When Cio-Cio-San comes forth expecting to find him, she finds Kate instead. Guessing the truth, the shattered Cio-Cio-San agrees to give up her child if his father will return for him. Then, sending even Suzuki away, she takes out the dagger with which her father committed suicide and bows before a statue of Buddha, choosing to die with honor rather than live in disgrace. As she raises the blade, Suzuki pushes the child into the room. Sobbing farewell, Cio-Cio-San sends him into the garden to play, then stabs herself. As she dies, Pinkerton is heard calling her name.

Science of Singing part-9: Support-Phone Conversation

Conversation with one of the greatest lirico-spinto sopranos of our time- Maria Pellegrini.

In order to understand technique we have to first define it. Maria defines it as "Natural", and not manufactured, sets of rules allowing to be the most productive and healthy way to achieve the artistic and vocal goals during performances.

After some mutual compliments :) we start talking about vocal technique, namely support.

The sensations of the supporive mechanism could be different with different singers but we both agree that low-abdomenal support is the most advance one: it's more ballanced because it has multy-directional "push" and puts control totaly on breathing mechanism rather then on some dubious manipulation with the tongue, nose and you name it.

When Lili Lehman introduced so called placement, it was done with the best intentions to put once and for all a perfect method allowing singers to support and place their voices; it had one big mistake of trying to make objective something that will always be so personal to every singer.

The World Famous Soprano Maria Pellegrini Bibliography

(Anna) Maria Pellegrini. Soprano, b Pescara, Italy, 15 Jul 1943, naturalized Canadian 1965. Emigrating to Canada in 1958, she studied 1960-4 with Ernesto Vinci at the RCMT, then in London with Joe Macko. She sang with the COC first (1963) as the High Priestess in Aida, then (1965, her debut in a major role) as Gilda in Rigoletto. Further COC roles have included Nedda in I Pagliacci (1966), Cio-Cio-San in Madama Butterfly (1971 and 1975), and Violetta in La Traviata (1974 and 1978). She was a 1967 Metropolitan Opera auditions winner and made her debuts at Covent Garden (1968) and Sadler's Wells (1969) as Gilda and Cio-Cio-San respectively.

Specializing in the Puccini repertoire, she has appeared with the Edmonton, Manitoba, Quebec, Southern Alberta (Calgary), and Vancouver operas and Opera Hamilton, and has sung in Genoa, Trieste, Parma, and Catania in Italy, in Pittsburgh and New Orleans in the USA, in Santo Domingo, and with the Welsh National Opera. She appeared in the 1977 CBC TV production of Madama Butterfly with Pierre Duval, Bernard Turgeon, Judith Forst, and a CBC orchestra conducted by Jean Deslauriers, and was Musetta in the 1980 production of La Bohème in Ottawa.

After her performance in the title role of Opera Hamilton's 1982 production of Madama Butterfly, Arthur Kaptainis wrote 'Chief among a strong and even cast was Maria Pellegrini... [who] waltzed through all the coquettish fan-fluttering motions with balletic ease. But her performance was still fresh and immediate, thanks to acting that conveyed innocence, an appearance that conveyed youth, and singing that was handsome and intense from beginning to end' (Toronto Globe and Mail, 18 Sep 1982).

Maria Pellegrini appears at Rose Theatre Brampton

Brampton - Maria Pellegrini has been called the "Callas of Canada" and has appeared with the world's finest singers, directors, and conductors in her many performances on the international stage. On November 24th, Maria Pellegrini will appear at Brampton's Rose Theatre, singing some of her most well-known arias. Brampton's new and fast-growing opera company, Brampton Lyric Opera, is excited to present Maria Pellegrini, Canada's operatic legend who was considered "the greatest Butterfly alive" by Lord Harewood, a past director of The Royal Opera House Covent Garden.

Brampton Lyric Opera was founded three short years ago by Brampton resident, Emilio Fina. From humble beginnings at the Heritage Theatre, Brampton Lyric Opera has quickly progressed to performing one concert and two productions with orchestra in the Rose Theatre every season. This is due to the hard work and vision of its Artistic Director, Emilio Fina. The annual autumn concert is an important fundraising event for Brampton Lyric Opera, enabling the company to proceed with its two fully-staged productions of well-known operas in the new year. The two productions for 2008 are Rigoletto and Le Nozze di Figaro. Last year, the concert featured world renowned Canadian Baritone, Russell Braun. Brampton Lyric Opera looks forward to another successful evening with operatic star Maria Pellegrini who has sung all the great heroines: Mimi, Violetta, Nedda, Gilda, and of course, Cio Cio San in Madama Butterfly. Miss Pellegrini will be joined by the BLO soloists, chorus and orchestra.

Brampton Lyric Opera presents Maria Pellegrini on November 24, 2007 at Brampton's Rose Theatre.

If you care about opera in Brampton, and if you would like to pay tribute to one of Canada's great artists, please support Brampton Lyric Opera and come out to hear Maria Pellegrini at the Rose Theatre on November 24th at 8:00 pm.
