impressions in my last trip,
1) Sanya,
went to Sanya from Newark to Chicago to Pudong to Sanya nonstop, arrive at 9pm local time,
a couple of my friends have been trying to make a baby for a while, and we are due to meet to catch up and discuss some business matters, so when we talked about where to meet I mentioned Sanya, since last time I went there I had some really good relaxed time, so Sanya it is where we go,
they arrived at 10pm, after two days of exhausting sales channel meeting at GuangZhou
since my friends now acquired 5-star tastes, rightly fitting for their wealth status, (mine remain 3 star), Sanya Hilton was the choice, with weekend rate running at $200 per night, and the hotel was apparently quite busy
----------
next morning we start 3 days of breakfast, swimming, talking, beach walking, wondering into lobby of other hotels, and bar hopping. At night I started to get up at around 4am to watch soap operas, which, are of exceedingly good quality. They like to watch a new detective show, 狄仁傑辦案, which, despite its setting as in Tang dynasty, has a strong feel of the western detective movies such as "oriental express", very brainy, very sophisticated. The one that impressed me was an urban yuppie/hippie movie, 誰的誰心疼, about chance encounters in the big city of Beijing, relationships between young men, young women, and their new best friends... cars. Find acting, fine sound/photo techniques.
I guess my conclusion on that front is that China is fast catching up with one of the "hi-level" creative business: media.
-------------
there is one story I think that, to those who still have a primitive image of China, might show the level of sophistication of people doing business in China,
I was a little afraid of taking at taxi alone at night at SanYa from airport for obvious reasons, so my wife called one agency that we used before, 100T, to arrange someone to pick me up so that at least we'd feel safe. What's totally out of my expectation is that they insisted not changing me the full fare, instead taking only a 10RMB token fee. Even I didn't book hotel through them this time around. I can only conclude that they wanted to build some good will with me so that I will always use them next time. Such long term customer relationship building is absolutely extraordinary. Later I chatted with other people and got confirmed that they are indeed one of the large agencies there. I feel almost obliged to say something truly amazing about them, check out their site at www.100t.com.
--------------
the settings at around the hotel are as good as anywhere,
except one funny thing, there is absolutely no birds.
no birds at all anywhere in the YaLong bay,
don't know if that's some local phenomenon or an indicator of some environmental issues.
--------------
there still a lot of foreign people as usual, but I notice that there are more domestic guests. Some are business related, one drug company doing new product announcement, and one steel company doing customer relationship things. There are also some that look like small business doing outside meeting kind of thing, and then there are families. Quite some families.
sure time has changed,
the most memorable moment came during one breakfast. I was sitting at a table alone, a young women and a baby came along and the lady asked if they can sit cross table, I guess they want to enjoy the lotus pond next to the table. Sure, I said. Somehow the way the young lady feeding the baby was a little awkward, so I ask gently, "is this your baby?". "No", she said, then she explain that she is the baby sitter, mom and dad still sleeping in room. They came to celebrate baby's 1 year birthday. Very proudly, she said,
"我們是深圳的孩子"
