第113封信

　　（1916年5月10日，紐約）

　　親愛的瑪麗：

　　昨天我寫了兩則寓言，現寄來請你修改並提意見。最近我寫了不少——都是用阿拉伯語寫作。我應該盡可能多地在《狂人》裏加一些東西。也許我會在今年夏天把它交給出版商。

　　這兩則寓言是：

　　一、我父親的花園裏有兩個籠子，一個關著頭獅子，是父親的奴仆從尼拿哇大漠帶來的；另一個籠裏關著一隻輟歌多時的麻雀。每日黎明，麻雀都要招呼獅子：“早上好啊，囚徒老兄！”

　　二、在聖殿的蔽蔭處，我和朋友見到一位寂坐的瞽者。朋友告訴我，他是本地最有智慧的人。

　　In my father’s garden there are two cages。In one there is a lion，which my father’s slaves brought from the desert of Nineveh；in the other cage is a songless sparrow。

　　Every day at dawn the sparrow calls to the lion：“Good morrow to thee，brother-prisoner。”瑪麗在回信時刪掉了兩個字（文中加橫線處）。

　　我撇下朋友，走到瞽者前打個招呼，同他交談起來。

　　言談間我問道：“請原諒我的冒昧：您自何時失明？”

　　“我生來是個盲人。”他答道。

　　我說：“我是個星象學家。”

　　於是他把手對準胸口，說：“我觀察的是這裏的太陽、月亮和星辰。”

　　這兩則寓言裏如有不妥之處，你可以告訴我嗎，親愛的瑪麗？
