很久以前，在一個名叫“紅河穀”的鄉村有一位牛仔小夥子，他暗戀同村的一位姑娘有很長一段時間了。一天小夥突然聽說姑娘要離開紅河穀了，他悲傷不已，向姑娘唱出了他依依不舍的心情。歌詞有三段，分別是這樣的：
聽說你就要離開紅河穀了，我會想念你，想念你明亮的眼睛和甜蜜的微笑，你的離開將帶走我們往日所有的歡樂。
要是你愛我，就陪我坐一坐，不要走得那樣匆忙。記住紅河穀，記住紅河穀有一個真心愛你的牛仔。

【附記】：從第三段歌詞看，歌唱者似乎應該是一位女士，而要離開紅河穀的是她一直暗戀的男士，因為隻有女人期待男人先主動開口表白愛情才合情合理，而不是倒過來。但由於這首歌年代久遠，現已無法考證誰是誰非，甚至連歌中“紅河穀”這個村子是在美國還是加拿大，也成為美、加兩國鄉村音樂界長期爭論的話題，至今沒有定論。
同樣沒有定論的就是這首歌的歌詞，版本很多，但大體的意思是一樣的。以下是我綜合各種版本做了一些修改後，比較滿意的版本：
