可不可以這樣說，近代中國的工業化如同古代中國的地域縱深，以此"大一統''的力量方可穫得，以禦外敵。

否則要麽被肢解，要麽成為西方附庸，如印度。

出於必要，古代中國承受了大一統文化的一些局限，近代中國則承受了工業化之痛。

China needed a deep enough land stretch to absorb the periodic invasions from the north.  大一統 served this strategy well.

The Roman empire, rimmed around the mediterranean sea, was unable to do that, thus failed into fragments.
