In the Ukrainian case, over 10,000 of Russian descents(though totalled since 2014). The Western media "fail" to report that. But this is one of the major causes of the war.
What was Russia supposed to do when they saw no sign of willingness of ending the atrocities after years of negotiation? We can easily blame Putin for striking too hard, but it is a very difficult task to manage a "proper" war when you are under the threat of powers like the US and NATO that may get involved anytime. So, you either strike or you don't.
