There is no need to mystify such issues, especially with the Chinese language for it carries much of its earliest meaning directly derived from life experiences in contrast to alphabetical languages such as English.

方格子as in 格物 is a concept as noble as any other more abstract ones. I actually think it is nobler since you can see a full history in it while the more abstract ones are just landmarks in this history.
