The 季羨林 book was quite good. Its author appeared an innocent human being, though not so much a deep thinker. By the way, I read a "similar"book too by 吳冠中. An innocent being too, but the book wasn't as well written.
Ji learnt and mastered Sanskrit through German. Given that German isn't an easy language ( 為人父 , is this true?), Ji must have been unusually gifted with languages. He stated that Sanskrit was truly complex and acquiring it would be formidable even for its committal students.
