Jeremy Lin Offseason News: Trade Rumors Say Rockets' Point Guard May Head to Minnesota
One of the biggest questions this upcoming NBA offseason is where will Kevin Love play next season? Many teams are interested in the three-time NBA all star and could use him going forward. Love is only 25 years old and provides a big body with good shooting.
The Houston Rockets season finished with a big disappointment in a first-round elimination to the Portland Trail Blazers. The Rockets have a lot of questions to be answered and a lot of holes to fix to be an elite basketball team. According to the International Business Times, the Rockets are trying to trade Lin, and the Timberwolves can pull it off.
It would make sense for the Rockets to trade Lin because of the system they run. Coach Kevin McHale has repeatedly used a rotating point guard system between James Harden, Jeremy Lin and Patrick Beverley. At this point, the Rockets are going to have to decide between Lin and McHale, and with no coaching changes in place in the foreseeable future, it would be better for Lin to go elsewhere.
The Timberwolves would make for a good trade option for the Rockets because of the value
. Many teams, such as the Los Angeles Lakers and New York Knicks, need a point guard but don't have the proper value to trade for Kevin Love. Of course, there's Carmelo Anthony and Kobe Bryant, but, let's be honest, they're not going to be traded. This could be very beneficial for the Rockets if they get Love. Love and Howard together on the court at the same time would be potentially the best big-man combo in the NBA. Maybe not Tim Duncan and David Robinson, but it will do.
It's a tough Western Conference, so every little bit helps.
For the Timberwolves this is a bit of a head-scratcher. The Timberwolves starting point guard Ricky Rubio has been a good player ever since entering the league in 2009 and was a fantastic player overseas. The Spanish-born point guard averaged 8.6 assists per game last season on a team that didn't even make the playoffs. Rubio is a little better of a passer than Jeremy Lin and is more of a prototypical point guard.
However, the Timberwolves could benefit from Lin's services. Although Rubio is a great point guard who resembles John Stockton, Lin is a more dynamic scorer who resembles Russell Westbrook and Gary Payton. Rubio relies on other players around him to score while he makes the passes. There's nothing wrong with that, but it hasn't brought the Timberwolves to the playoffs yet. Lin may be a better fit because of his ability to score and take over games.
If the Timberwolves do acquire Lin, they may want to trade Rubio soon after. Having both Lin and Rubio would mean the Timberwolves have two great point guards and have a lot of leverage and trade value.
