I was totally livid last night at the end of the 4th quarter. You don't get to choose when Pau Gasol decides to wake up and play like the best 4 out there. You don't get to choose when Dwight Howard picks up his energy at controlling the paint and challenging everything moving towards that territory. But you do get to choose to play a 2-for-1 with 49 seconds left, especially after a timeout.
It was textbook easy, and elementary school easy, to go for a 2-for-1 with that much time left on the clock. You don't need to rush anything, just calm down, and run a set play with 2 or 3 options, and make sure you take a good shot with at least 30 seconds left on the clock.
What did we have after the timeout? Harden had the ball from the beginning, dribbling and watching. He was cold, and didn't want to shoot pull up with a hand in his face, which is understandable and probably the right thing to do. But there was never a play called, that much was clear. On the end, Lin ended up with the rock and shot a desperate 3, but then they only had 26 seconds left. So much for 2-for-1. If you are not going to run a set play, and just shoot a prayer, why didn't you do it in the first 10 seconds? So you still have enough time to run a play for the last possession?
As much as McHale is bashed here on this board, he's NOT a micro-managing guy, which is great situation for young players. That's exactly the reason this young team had so much energy throughout the season, and they never played timidly. They outperformed everyone's expectation. But that doesn't mean you are completely hands-off at such critical moments. When young players' confidence was shaken (shots are not falling), and the game is on the line, you need to be more decisive and hand out orders. You can't just let them to figure out by themselves.
I was never so upset with McHale before, but last minute of last regular season game, he had to make my blood boiling.
