That was a correct call. If Raven punt from 5 yard line, the ball would end up at the middle field. If 49er got a big return, they will have one or two real shots to the end zone to win the game.
By taking a safety, Raven would take some time off clock and still lead by 3. The most important thing was the ball would be punt from 20 yards, not 5 yards. The ball definitely would end up somewhere deep in 49er half. 49er had much less chance to get a big runback.
That was exactly what happened yesterday.
