The U.S. had been 12-0 against Canada in global championship history (Olympics and World Cup) and 30-2 in all senior play. This was their first meeting at an Olympics or worlds in the Dream Team era (since 1992). The U.S. lost three times at a global championship for the first time since the 2004 Athens Games.
Germany's greatest achievements to date have been competing in 25 appearances at the EuroBasket, winning gold in 1993, silver in 2005, and bronze in 2022. Germany have also made six appearances at the FIBA World Cup, with their best result coming in 2002, when the team won bronze. At the Olympic Games, in Germany's six appearances, their top performances are three quarter-final finishes (1984, 1992, 2020).
