Illness and death
Compatriots, our land is one legend poorer, but one myth richer. Rest in peace, sir
In October 2015, Cruyff, a heavy smoker until undergoing open heart surgery in 1991, was diagnosed with lung cancer.[118] After giving up smoking in 1991 following surgery, he took to sucking lollipops when watching games.[119] He featured in a Catalan health department advert, saying: "Football has given me everything in life, tobacco almost took it all away."[119][120]
In February 2016, Cruyff reported that he was "2–0 up" in the first half of his "match" against cancer, saying "the results have been very positive".[121]
On 24 March 2016, Cruyff died surrounded by his family in Barcelona, Spain at the age of 68 from lung cancer.[122][123]
