舍己在合和本聖經裏大約出現了7次，並且都是出現在新約裏。其中福音書裏出現了3次，其它書信裏出現了4次，而前3次說的意思和後4次說的意思截然不同。
舍己在新約裏出現的前3次都是耶穌在福音書裏說的: "若有人要跟從我，就當舍己"。這裏"舍己"原文的意思是"否定自己"，即否定自己在認識耶穌以前在世界裏所學的一切思維邏輯，從而能夠順從耶穌的話(即基督的靈)，悔改轉向耶穌，通過耶穌得救。
舍己在新約裏出現的後4次都是在保羅的書信裏。其中3次的意思是說耶穌為了我們的罪舍命，犧牲在十字架上; 第四次的地方，意思是說基督徒假設能夠為了耶穌的道舍命受迫害，但是卻沒有愛，那麽這種舍命仍是無益的。
可見舍己在新約裏出現的前3次的意思與後4次的意思是完全不同的。

加2:20 我已經與基督同釘十字架．現在活著的、不再是我、乃是基督在我裏麵活著．並且我如今在肉身活著、是因信 神的兒子而活、他是愛我、為我舍己。
I have been crucified with Christ, and it is no longer I that live, but Christ living in me. That life which I now live in the flesh, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself up for me.
弗5:25 你們作丈夫的、要愛你們的妻子、正如基督愛教會、為教會舍己．
Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the assembly, and gave himself up for it;
林前13:3 我若將所有的賙濟窮人、又舍己身叫人焚燒、卻沒有愛、仍然與我無益。
If I dole out all my goods to feed the poor, and if I give my body to be burned, but don't have love, it profits me nothing.
