Based on what I could see, VR or IS should be very helpful for this type of long lens. Even with a tripod, you could see the vibration.
Guess one will need higher speed (1/1000 or higher) to get a sharp picture with such a long lens.
Also, it is a pain in the A$$ to move this thing around with the tripod.
Paid $5100 for it with the hood and hard case etc. I think it is a good deal.
