200 to 300 dpi is a good rule of thumb for printing.  With 40D, you can print your images to 20x30 if you process them properly.

Unless you want to print a poster, you should be fine with your 40D. When you submit your images for printing, you size them to 300dpi.  The printing shop will have no idea of what camera you used to produce your images.
