Justice Served After a Homeless Man’s Rabbit is Thrown into a River
John Byrne, a homeless man in Dublin, was begging near a river with his pet rabbit, Barney, when a youth snatched him from his arms and threw him in the river. Gary Kearney, the offending animal hater, pleaded guilty and has been sentenced to 4 months in jail.
- John Byrne said he was horrified to see his pet rabbit swimming around in circles, staring up at him, after being thrown in the river. He did what any pet lover would do and jumped in after Barney, pulling his lifeless body out of the water.

- That’s when John gave Barney the kiss of life (not unlike his re-enactment in this photo) along with some CPR. Barney responded and returned to life.
-
- John was awarded the Compassionate Citizen Award for his act of goodness toward an animal in need. John said that his rabbit and 2 dogs are “spoiled rotten” and they “get everything they want.” This man may be homeless, but his love for animals is amazing. :)
