Groundhog Day forecast: Punxsutawney Phil predicts early spring

Thousands gathered in Gobbler's Knob, Pennsylvania to see whether the famous groundhog would see his shadow. Legend has it that if Punxsutawney Phil sees his shadow on Feb. 2, winter will last six more weeks. If he doesn't see his shadow, spring will come early.

每年的 2 月 2 日是美國傳統的土撥鼠日，在這一天，冬眠的土撥鼠要醒過來，從洞裏出來預測春天。一般來說，土撥鼠要看自己的影子，如果看到影子了，就回洞裏接著睡大覺去，因為春天還要再等 6 個星期才能到來，如果土撥鼠看不到自己的影子，就說明春天就要到了。

為什麽要選擇 2 月 2 日呢？因為這個日子來自“聖燭節 (Candlemas) ”，就是在聖誕節後第 40 天，這一天，天主教徒點起蠟燭來紀念聖母瑪麗。這是個歐洲的傳統，正如詩歌裏唱的：

If Candlemas be fair and bright,

Winter has another flight.

If Candlemas brings clouds and rain,

Winter will not come again.

當德國移民在賓西法尼亞州定居以後，這些被稱為 Pennsylvania Dutch 的人把這個傳統帶到了美國，預測春天的光榮任務就交給了美國的原住民“土撥鼠”。

一般來說 2 月 2 日這一天，土撥鼠從洞裏出來，各大電視台都直播這一盛況，如果這一天是個好天氣，土撥鼠就能看到自己的影子，按照傳統的說法，如果 2 月 2 日陽光燦爛，那麽以後 6 個星期天氣會很糟糕，冬天還將延續。如果這一天天氣不好，那麽土撥鼠就看不到自己的影子，就說明春天到了。

美國官方的土撥鼠，或者說是政府認證的土撥鼠是賓州 Punxsutawney 的土撥鼠。
