among the most trying of my professional career, more so than the Bulge.
The war in Korea abruptly turned from victory to humiliating defeat, one
of the worst in our history. MacArthur lost control of the battle and his
emotions, leading Washington to lose all confidence in him. Throughout
the ordeal we believed it likely thai a global war with Russia could erupt
at any hour, that the free world was poised on the brink of catastrophe.
