春秋戰國時期, 中國人發明了世界最早的精密複式機械precision compound machines

Smithsonian博物館收藏有下麵這枚距今2500年前的螺紋玉環。哈佛大學的Peter Lu發現這些紋飾與阿基米德螺旋線驚人地吻合。他在《科學》上發表了自己的觀點：“these grooves follow the exact mathematical form of the Archimedes spiral, demonstrating the ability of ancient craftsmen to interconvert two types of motion precisely, in order to fashion the jade rings. The close conformity to this mathematical form confirmed that these craftsmen must have had a precision compound machine (as opposed to a simple machine) in 550 BC, predating Archimedes by several centuries.”

他還做出了一個實物原型機（見下麵的視頻）。盡管這不是直接證據，但Lu的這個旁證還是非常強的。沒有這樣的精密複式機械，我是無法想象，古人如何僅僅憑目測和手工做出如此完美的一組數學曲線。考慮到這件實物早了阿基米德幾個世紀，不由得對春秋戰國時期的工匠肅然起敬。

Nature 也報導了這個有趣的發現。稱古中國的美學鑒賞家也是技術發燒友，”Chinese aesthetes may have been technophiles too.”
