The Pakistan Atomic Energy Committee was set up in 1953. Since then it has trained a large number of scientists: its first “swimming pool” reactor went into operation in December 1965. The late Mr. Bhutto, who fathered Pakistan's nuclear program then told his people: “If India builds the bomb, we will eat grass or leaves, even go hungry, but we will get one of our own. We have no alternative.”
