My daughter is a senior at a high school. She applied a specialty program at a public unversity. The program is very competitive, there were 200 applicants and only admitted 30. The university itself is very so-so.
Here is the situation, her high school GPA is 4.0 and ranked top 5 percent out of 300, her SAT is 2000.
Yet she was rejected. I called the school immediately and asked what were the criteria in their selection. They say the criteria are 1. GPA and high school ranking; 2. SAT; 3. leadership. I asked what was the average SAT of the 30 admitted. They say 1800. Apparently her denial is not of GPA or SAT, but leadership (she put some church activities there). The leadership is really hard to quantify. I asked them to provide a summary of the admitted as compared to my daughter. They refuse to provide such information citing protection of privacy.
I feel it is really unfair and feel discriminated. It is very easy to tell a Chinese applicant simply by looking at the spelling of the last name. However, I can not generate evidences to prove discrimination.
My questions to the folks here:
1.What can I do to have them to provide the information?
2.Is there any way I can sue in court? If so, what would be the best way to collect the evidence? What would be the reasonable goal of such suit?
Any comments or suggestions are welcome, I am pretty sure there are similar situations out there, how can fight this kind of unfairness, in general?
How to fight injustice in college admission?
