在美國超市順手拿商品放入自己口袋被抓，後果將會怎樣？

我一個朋友去超市，看見一個很喜歡的東西，他就順手放進自己的口袋。出門時被人發現被抓。請問那位朋友懂法律。說一說他後果將會怎樣。謝謝！
