Did your HOA send a reminder to everyone or specifically you? Did they say you are in violation, or just reminding the rules? If they didn't say you are in violation and didn't ask for any change, then let the sleeping dog lie...
....until they said you needed to do something. Only then you'll talk to the management company, which I assume sent you the violation letter.
Usually anything management company does has to be approved by the board, so if the management company ask you to do something, tell them you'll talk to the board in the next HOA meeting (hopefully monthly).
And you show up in board meeting asking for an exemption, saying this is never enforced and your current tenant is not under any PM but everything is fine. Promise that if you are looking for a new tenant you'll get a PM involved.
