例如，一個威脅:除非支付錢，否則提出刑事指控或向警察報告，仍是敲詐。即使敲詐罪犯也有權利提交警方報告，如果他合並（１）向警察報告的合法行為，（２）要求支付不采取行動的違法行為，違法者仍然犯敲詐勒索。但請注意，這威脅提起民事訴訟通常不被認為是敲詐，即使該訴訟是輕浮。
