"Long" is too indefinite

Whether you can succeed depends on the nature of the contract. If it is an at will contract, they can lay you off even for no reason. If you have a contract set for a definite term, then you can ask for compensation. If the contract doesn't mention, it is presumed to be at will contract. Even with the word "long relationship", it should still be an at will contract.
