you should go to court and appeal it (pleas for not guilty). Mostlikely, the fine will be reduced (by at least 3/4) or waived if you renewed your registration. Also, you won't accumulate the point so the insurance won't go up. It's very well worth the trouble to appeal. Most judges will be lenient towards this kind of cases. Prepare some good excuses (like moving, travling etc.) to tell judge that you overlooked the situation, not intentionally.
